Welcome to BL4286 Advanced Topics in Evolution

All module materials will be posted here on Moodle for you to access throughout the term. In the sections below are files relating to the lectures, presentations and assessed course components. If you have any questions or concerns about the module, or you are having difficulty accessing files or problems with the assignments for the course, please email the module co-ordinators Michael Ritchie (mgr) or Nathan Bailey (nwb3).

Lecture content will be determined by the new papers on evolutionary topics that are published across the term. This will be explained in more detail in lecture 1.

Presentations will be given by students on new advances published in evolutionary topics during most weeks of the term. Students will sign up for a week to present during the term and will need to identify a paper to present to the class from your own reading. You will need to select and send your paper to the module co-ordinators at least one week in advance of your presentation so that they can check the paper content is appropriate. Presentations should consist of a series of power point slides and a spoken presentation, lasting around 30 minutes. This process will be explained in more detail in lecture 1, and examples of presentations will be given by the lecturers in lecture 2 and 3.

Coursework assignments for the module make up 100% of your mark and consist of a written ‘news and views’ article (33.3%), a podcast recording (33.3%) and a class test in week 11 consisting of a 2-hour, seen, open book essay (33.3%). Details of format, content and deadlines can be found in the document below.

Recommended text book for the module is the Princeton Guide to Evolution, Losos et al. 2017 and a link to this book in the library can be found below. Please refer to this resource for background information on any of the topics we touch on this term in the papers and presentations in lectures.

Any changes or announcements will be made via the module MMS. Please make sure you check email regularly and if you want to contact a specific lecturer. We will also maintain a Teams channel for recording sessions and sharing files.
