Course info

The module aims to enable students to understand the development and terminology of aspects of classical Arabic scholarship, to help them understand the structures that underpin the Arabic language, and to support them through encounters with a representative selection of important classical Arabic sources. In this module students will also deepen their knowledge of Arabic grammar through readings, mainly from the sources of early and classical Arabic literary biography. We will translate and comment upon these readings in class.
