This module explores the dynamics of Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories and the ensuing conflicts in the region from its origins to now, drawing upon postcolonial, historical, and critical IR frameworks. The module analyses the following: the settler colonial ideology and practices that shaped the conflict in the past and now; and the local, regional, and international dimensions of the occupation and conflict. It also evaluates the impact of occupation, resistance, and war; and assesses the significance of leaders, social movements, ideas and the international system on the dispute. The module interrogates traditional IR approaches to the conflict, what we understand by peace, conflict, and dialogue, and explores the utility of theories of critical security, postcolonialism and emotion when analysing one of the most enduring colonial projects today.
