This module combines medieval studies with cutting-edge digital technology. It invites students to explore how digital tools transform our understanding of the European Middle Ages. Students will engage with various digital methodologies, from digitising manuscripts to creating videos about manuscripts, which are themselves a time-based medium. Those who want to may also explore how augmented or virtual reality may heighten understanding of handling manuscripts. The module also examines the role of social media in disseminating medieval studies. The assignments, which consist of a Wikipedia entry, a blog post, and a short video, ask students to create different kinds of digital media while keeping tone and audience in mind. Students will evaluate how knowledge about the Middle Ages is formed, communicated, and experienced in our increasingly digital world. We will consider a variety of digital tools in medieval studies including: techniques in manuscript digitisation, AI-assisted medieval script readers, computer-aided visual tools for envisioning manuscript structure, tools for discovering and showing patterns in data sets, and imaging techniques such as RTI and spectroscopy.
