This module offers a high-level introduction to Early Modern love poetry. The module charts Petrarchism as an enduring global phenomenon—the legacy of which can still be felt today—through the works of some of the finest poets of the period. Through close textual analysis of contemporary poetry across four languages (French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese), you will gain an understanding of the rich cultural, philosophical, and literary contexts that helped shape how we express and understand love in the West.
