This option starts with a study of reactions to heresy in the medieval west and then compares this with the treatment of other social marginals. It explores the reasons why heresy produced such strong reactions in the eleventh to fifteenth centuries and compares and contrasts the treatment of heretics with that given to other social and religious minorities: Jews, the bodily-impaired, sufferers of Hansen's disease, sex workers, slaves, ethnic and racial minorities.
