This is the first of paired core modules addressing the interpretation and criticism of mediaeval sources. Together they form the compulsory core course for the MLitt in Mediaeval History. ME5208 starts by concentrating upon a selected central body of documentation and the associated problems and introduces appropriate skills training. Source training will be completed in ME5209 in semester two by a paper on a topic of your choice, together with training in seminar presentation and discussion skills. A separate handout will be supplied for ME5209.

This year the first body of documentation for ME5208 draws from records of the inquisition. They have been selected because – whatever your particular research interests – they raise pertinent questions about interpreting historical evidence which we will explore together. In the second half of the semester, you will be invited to contribute to the corpus of material discussed and lead part of the weekly class discussion (in pairs).
