These Biology Skills Tutorials aim to enhance both your subject-specific knowledge and employability through a series of activities, discussions, and reviews. These tutorials offer an informal, supportive learning environment where you can explore Biology with students studying for similar degrees while also fostering transferable skills valuable for your future career. The tutorials also provide an opportunity to build a productive relationship with your tutor, which can be valuable as you prepare for the next step after your degree (e.g., career planning, requesting references). Typically, there are around six or seven tutees in each tutorial group, although this can vary.

You will have the opportunity to sign up for a tutorial group before the semester begins. During the sign-up period, staff identities remain anonymised, but you can view their building location and research focus. Please choose a group that aligns with your degree programme or wider module choices (for example, if you are on the BSc Marine Biology, you will probably want to sign up for a session hosted by a member of staff based in the Oceans Institute). You will be able to see when all four tutorial slots have been scheduled across the semester, so please try to choose a group that won't clash with your timetabled modules or other responsibilities.

Tutors will contact tutees via email at the start of the semester to introduce themselves and confirm tutorial dates, times, and locations. Although staff will aim to host the tutorials on the dates indicated on the tutorial sign-up page, note that times may change subject to tutor/tutee commitments, so please check your email regularly for any updates.

In addition, as you progress through your degree at the University of St Andrews, you will participate in a wide variety of tutorial classes within the School of Biology. Tracking the skills you've developed across multiple modules and years can be challenging. Therefore, this Moodle will help you pull out any relevant non-academic skills you've practiced for job applications, CVs, and cover letters, and consider which skills you have gained or have yet to gain during your time at St Andrews.
