Module Induction

 

Module Description 

The module provides an opportunity to learn about clinical psychology and neuropsychology. Students will be given a better understanding of the roles of Clinical Psychologists and Clinical Neuropsychologists. The module will also cover the roles of other key professionals (e.g., Psychiatrists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists) within a mental health team.

By the end of the module, students will be able to describe some of the conditions seen, assessed, and treated in clinical practice. Students will be introduced to how Clinicians assess and diagnose specific psychological, neurological, and neurodevelopmental disorders using standardised testing and psychological formulation. Students will gain an understanding of how, as scientist-practitioners, clinical psychologists and neuropsychologists use best practice guidelines and evidence-based interventions to inform their work with patients.

 

Key Learning Goals 

· Students will be able to discuss the underpinnings of Clinical Neuropsychology

· Students will be familiar with neuroanatomical details and neuropathologies important to     

  Neuropsychology

· Students will be able to identify major Neuropsychological Syndromes

· Students will be able to select appropriate tests for a given syndrome and know how to apply them

  in principle

 

Additional skills relevant for clinical practice

 

-          Critical analysis

-          Communication and presentation skills

-          Basic understanding of formulation and psychological therapies

-          Understanding of the interface between theory and clinical practice using evidence

            based treatment

-          How to use and interpret scores from some neuropsychological tests

-          Mindfulness exercises


Reading

You should read the Student Handbook, which is available on Moodle. This contains full details on all aspects, including Academic Regulations, Codes of Practice and other relevant information. Suggested reading is also included at the end of the handbook along with support links. 


Assessment

Online seen exam(100%). Word limit and duration to be confirmed closer to the time.  

The online assessment should be submitted to MMS as Word documents (essay). Specific guidance and submission instructions will be provided closer to the assessment.

Students will also be expected to present academic papers/vignettes in class relating to Neurodevelopmental conditions, Psychiatric Conditions and Neuro-Cognitive Disorders. Although this is not graded, participation is required and adaptations can be made to include students with additional learning needs.
