SA 3506 Methods in Social Anthropology
S2 2025/26
This module aims to introduce you to the diverse methods employed in conducting anthropological research. How does anthropological research get done? How do anthropologists gather ethnographic data, and what kinds of skills and sensibilities does anthropological research require? Over the course of this module, you will gain understanding of research methods that anthropologists deploy. We will consider their diverse applications, and their potentials and challenges. In addition to practical training in foundational methods and in specialized approaches, attention will be paid to what makes the ethnographic method unique and productive, and the ethics and politics of ethnographic research. The weekly lectures will be supplemented by discussion- and exercise-led seminars, which will serve as opportunities for students to consider the applications of these methods in their own research. Students will come out of the module with a critical understanding of ethnographic methods, and a diverse methodological toolkit to be deployed in their future research and in professional settings.
