This module introduces students to early modern love poetry, to the literary traditions that shaped it, and to its continuing influence on poetry today. The module charts the enduring global phenomena of classical love elegy and Petrarchism – the legacies of which can still be felt now – through the works of some of the finest poets of the period. Through close textual analysis of poetry in three languages (Latin, French and Italian), you will gain an understanding of the rich cultural, philosophical, and literary contexts that helped shape how we express and understand love in the West.
