This is a course on the various methods economist use to estimate causal effects. They form the backbone of what has come to be known as the “credibility revolution” in econometrics. Joshua Angrist (the author of the primary textbook for the module), David Card, and Guido Imbens won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2021 for their work on these methods and their application to empirical questions in economics. It is fair to say that there are few, if any, recent papers in empirical microeconomics that purport to estimate a causal effect that do not use one of the methods covered in this module. By taking this module, you will learn how to think like an applied microeconomist in approaching real world questions.
