Module Description: This module addresses big picture questions about the nature, aims, and methods of philosophy (i.e., about what philosophy is, what it’s for, and what doing philosophy involves). In its 2026-2027 iteration, the module explores fundamental questions about the philosophy of morality and politics. What is the point of normative theory? How should we think about the relationship between theory, pedagogy, and everyday moral and political practice? What makes for a good argument? What makes for a good question? What should a piece of philosophical writing do—for the writer, for the reader, and/or for the world at large? We’ll be looking at a variety of different ways of answering these questions: Socratic, therapeutic, genealogical, Daoist, humanistic, ameliorative, and more.
