This is a 3000 level module aimed at third and fourth year Honours students. The module intends to provide an introduction to the social and economic conditions of southern English communities between the conversion to Christianity and the beginning of Scandinavian attacks in the decades around 800. Whilst it might be useful for students to acquaint themselves with the broad brush political narrative of the period, when the English were divided into perhaps a many as a dozen kingdoms, the focus of the course will be on the workings of society rather than high politics. Each weekly seminar will comprise of student led discussion on the basis of set readings of both primary and secondary literature.
