This project monitors biodiversity in and around the estate of the University of St Andrews, to determine how the University’s Biodiversity strategy is impacting on wildlife while increasing basic environmental literacy skills in St Andrews students.

Issues involved or addressed

Engagement with biodiversity is proportional to a person’s knowledge: a walk in a natural environment is more rewarding to someone who can identify the species they encounter. But relatively few undergraduates, even those studying biology, know how to identify the animals and plants around them. This module takes monitoring of birds, plants and insects as a starting point to a natural history education. By training students in field identification, survey and analysis techniques, and scientific communication we will create a database to monitor biodiversity change as the University manages its estates and create a natural history culture at St Andrews
